Hidden beneath the country music glitz of Nashville are the charming melodies of up and coming folk/jazz artist Colleen McCarron. Since her arrival in 2003, the 22-year old has given the college-age music fans in Nashville a reason to take off their cowboy hats. With fresh, piano-based musical timbres reminiscent of Norah Jones, McCarron's knack for poetic melodies calls to mind the likes of Joni Mitchell.
Loud, smoky venues turn into living rooms when Colleen McCarron takes the stage. Her winning personality invites the audience to listen as friends, not merely fans. It's the intimate feel of her live shows that has been captured in her EP, The Lonely Lessons. With raw, organic production, The Lonely Lessons has emotional accessibility—a heartfelt snapshot of her personal life presented in a musically fresh way. In her sorrowful ballad, "My Heart," for example, Colleen's voice was recorded as she lied on her back reflectively, singing over the vintage sounds of a Fender Rhodes. Intuitive originality such as this has become a hallmark of McCarron's songwriting career.
Although The Lonely Lessons EP conveys McCarron's darker, sensitive side, she is not without a level of bouncy energy. Her live shows convey a childlike playfulness as she even includes creative instrumentation of kazoos and toy drum kits. Even as her latest EP is seeing its fruition, a more upbeat full-length studio album is in the works. This project, scheduled to be released next fall, will feature trademark additions of drums, bass, and vibraphone.
A native of Tallahasse, Florida, Colleen McCarron originally came to Nashville to pursue a degree in music at Belmont University. During her time of study, though, she realized her songwriting gift and her contemporaries soon took notice. In the spring of 2007, she won Belmont's Writer's Showcase and earned a place in the Best of the Best Showcase that April. This recognition has been a springboard for McCarron, whose local fan base is growing with her every performance.
What Colleen McCarron offers in The Lonely Lessons EP is an honest look at personal struggle through a musical lens all her own. She says, "The only time I am comfortable being vulnerable is when I write my songs. With every chord and lyric, I share the parts of my heart that, without music, I am too scared to speak." And to her songwriting candor, audiences are too attracted to resist.
